New: Jabp 4.00

A Happy New Year to all our visitors and wishing you a peaceful and successful 2018.

Today we are releasing Jabp version 4.00. This is the first complete rewrite of our desktop personal finance program since it was launched in 2002. While the code is all new, much of the look-and-feel of the previous version has been retained. However some concepts from JabpLite4 for Android have also been incorporated. Users of previous versions should find much that is familiar.

The main difference between Jabp4 for desktop and JabpLite4 for Android is that the former supports multiple databases. Hence the options for New File, Open File, Split/Merge files have been retained from earlier versions of Jabp.

The file structure for Jabp4 is new and is not compatible with earlier versions. However the backup format is identical, so transferring data is as easy as exporting from the earlier program and importing into the new Jabp4. This backup format is also shared with JabpLite4 for Android, so data can easily be exchanged between the programs.

As always, Jabp4 is completely free software. It will run on any version of Windows, Mac OS and Linux with a Java runtime. We hope you enjoy using the new program.

JabpLite4 includes built-in support for Android Pay which can be turned on in Preferences. There are numerous other minor improvements.

A big thank you to my beta-tester Alan R for his patience and his detailed feedback during the development of JabpLite4.

Announcement: Jabp for legacy devices

From version 2.45 onwards, we will no longer be releasing new versions of our personal finance software Jabp for legacy devices such as Psions, IPAQs, Windows Mobile 5 & 6 and UIQ2/UIQ3. However version 2.44 will remain available from this website.

This decision reflects the very small user base for such legacy devices, compared to current desktop and laptop machines. Experienced Jabp users of legacy devices can still update by manually copying the latest Jabp.jar to the appropriate folder on their devices. Unfortunately this technique won’t work for UIQ2 & UIQ3 phones which require special installation packages.

If anyone is seriously inconvenienced by this decision, then please contact me by email (to the address shown in the program).

Three enhancements for JabpLite running on Android devices.

* New preference: Save State In Background. If set to Yes, the program saves its state whenever going to background. The downside is that this can take a few seconds on low-powered devices. The upside is that if the operating system closes the program while in background (Android is prone to do this), then JabpLite won’t have to rebuild index files when it is next run.

* Back key enabled for Android as follows: if in a dialog, then pressing the back key cancels the dialog; if in a view, then pressing the back key returns to the Home (Accounts) screen; if in the Home screen, then pressing the back key exits the program cleanly.

* When importing/exporting data on Android devices, the screen scrolls when full.

New: DvdToSymbian 1.00

DvdToSymbian is a simple Windows batch script to convert widescreen DVD films using the free VLC player for watching on a Symbian S60v5/S^3 phone with screen size 640×360 – for example, the Nokia 5800/N97/N8, Sony Ericsson Satio/Vivaz.

One of the most popular multi-purpose media players is VLC which runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It will play all main video/audio formats, handles streaming media and much else besides. VLC is free and is available from www.videolan.org.

If you are already a VLC user, you may know that it can also convert between video formats. For example you can transcode a video which is in DivX format to MP4 format, so that it can be played on a Symbian device. Unfortunately, converting videos using VLC’s GUI is a bit fiddly and some of the more powerful transcoding options aren’t available. To get the full power of VLC, you need to use the command line interface.

Starting from a DOS prompt, DvdToSymbian.bat will rip a widescreen film (2.35:1 aspect ratio) from DVD so that it can be played back on a Symbian 640×360 screen. This batch file is for Windows, however it’s possible to write similar scripts for Mac OS X and Linux. Here are the steps (just do these the first time only):

  • Open DvdToSymbian.txt in Windows Notepad.
  • Set variable A to your DVD drive.
  • Set variable H to the destination directory for the converted file.
  • Save as ‘DvdToSymbian.bat’
  • Now to convert your DVD film, open a Command Prompt and type:

    DvdToSymbian (filename)

    DOS Command line

VLC will start transcoding and you will see:

    DOS Command line

Wait until VLC has finished and copy the converted file to your Symbian device. Now sit back, get the popcorn ready and enjoy the film!

Note: please observe copyright laws when using this program.

    17/05/09

    Updated: JabpLite 1.52

This update for our personal finance program JabpLite incorporates the functionality to synchronise with Jabp, which was previously handled by a separate program JabpSync. To use the new function go to Extra Options>Sync to Jabp.

We’ve been considering this change for some time. When we first started work on JabpLite in 2004, very few phones had the ability to read/write to a memory card from Java. Also, available memory was more limited which made it important to keep JabpLite as small as possible. For this reason, when writing the code to synchronise with Jabp, we decided to use a separate program JabpSync. Now in 2009, most mobile devices can read/write to memory card from Java, and most devices have more RAM available to run larger programs. So it is now more convenient to incorporate the synchronisation code directly into JabpLite.

FreEPOC users who install JabpLite version 1.52 and later can safely uninstall JabpSync. The separate program JabpFile is still required for backup/restore and import/export to QIF files.

    Announcement: JabpLite distribution & support

We are making some changes to the way that our Java MIDP personal finance program JabpLite will be distributed and supported in the future. Starting from version 1.12, since almost all new phones support Java MIDP 2.0, the MIDP 1.0 version will no longer be enhanced or included in the distribution zip. This simplifies the program support for us. Secondly, the PC version for the MIDP Emulator will now be packaged separately. As a result, the standard JabpLite download zip is greatly reduced in size. We hope these changes will make things clearer and more convenient for JabpLite users.

    We’re back! (Well, almost…)

Last friday the server hosting our database died due to a harddrive crash. Unfortunately there were no recent backups and no chance of bringing the data back so we had to start from scratch on a new server. Lots of stuff is still missing, but we are in the process of restoring Freepoc to its former self.
If your are in desperate need of an application that has not yet been added to the database please check downloads.freepoc.org.
